High Tea at Beerenberg Family Farm, Adelaide Hills

Beerenberg has been a staple of South Australia since 1839. The Paech family sailed from Prussia to South Australia and the rest is history. Grant and Carol Paech inherited the farm. They planted a strawberry crop, and Grant began to sell strawberries from the roadside tin shed he had built.

In 1971, the strawberry farm evolves in to making their own strawberry jam. The name and brand were born, ‘Beerenberg’ meaning ‘Berry Hill’ in German. Beerenberg has stayed in the family with remarkable success. Beerenberg products are today sold across Australia and the world, from jams to chutneys to relishes to honey. You may have had them on a plane, in a hotel, in a café or at a friend’s place. I am sure you have your favourite Beerenberg product!

In 2020 the Family Farm Beerenberg café opened with food, farm-made ice cream, cooking demonstrations, tastings, the farm shop, private event spaces and now the High Tea.

The Beerenberg High Tea in the Family Farm café has a rustic atmosphere with a freshly made high tea including a range of their products. Unfortunately, it was not strawberry season when we went. Please make sure you go when it is strawberry picking season. It is a rite of passage when visiting the farm to pick your own fresh, juicy strawberries! November to April is strawberry picking season. It is still worth going outside of the season in autumn/winter too. The colour of autumn leaves and winter flowers is extremely pretty and romantic in the Adelaide Hills.

I was delighted to see crumpets on the menu. How good are crumpets?! These were savoury with the classic flavours of smoked salmon and cream cheese with a modern hot honey twist. Hot honey is the rage now. I like honey but make it Beerenberg and it taste so much better! I am a fan of sweet and savoury flavour combinations too.

An ingredient I have never seen, was added to the Pork and Fennel sausage roll with Quince and Pear For Cheese topped with petite apple. The chef explained it was a French Baby Apple. Very interesting to see a tiny, tiny apple.

I do love Red Velvet Cake. The one on the Beerenberg High Tea menu was served with Beerenberg Strawberry Jam and Mascarpone. On our visit it was served with fresh blueberries as it was not Strawberry Season. Blueberries are great too! The cake was moist and very tasty.

The T-bar, Royal-T Sapphire Butterfly tea was so interesting. It is blue! The tea is made of Butterfly Pea petals. When you add lemon, it turns purple. I assumed it is due to the acidity of the lemon. It was served with Beerenberg Honey.

The Beerenberg Family Farm High Tea was extremely pleasant. The High Tea items were fresh and tasty. The staff were genuinely nice, friendly, and attentive. The chef also came out from the kitchen and greeted all tables. It is nice to get out of the city and experience some of the great produce offered in South Australia.

Angie McBride

Angie got her passion for high tea, in particular scones from her Nanna. She would stay at her house regularly and they would bake scones, pasties and cakes for hours. Angie’s scones are quite popular amongst her friends. She says they need to be traditionally made though – kneading the butter and making a well for the milk! Not cream and lemonade thank you! She is a self-confessed tea snob and loves a great quality tea. She says it’s lovely, soothing and there’s nothing like a pretty tea cup.
