Looking for a taste of the sweet life? Look no further. Located along Johnston Street in Collingwood, Mamor Chocolates is a decadent tea and chocolate salon where indulgence meets elegance.
The intimate space (accommodating up to 14 guests for private functions) draws parallels with a Parisian drawing room, complete with bright red walls and curtains, an antique chandelier suspended from a ceiling rose, gold-gilded mirrors and bar carts, and polished mahogany furniture paired with Victorian dining chairs.
Each table is thoughtfully dressed in a different set of vintage bone china – with Aynsley and Royal Albert among them – complemented by petite silver cutlery and tea poured from vintage silver teapots. The attention to detail sets the tone before a single bite is taken.
Meanwhile, a glass case showcases Mamor’s handmade chocolates, alongside larger creations (including whimsical chocolate handbags and high heels) that hint at the playful luxury to come. Handmade jams and teas are also available to take a little sweetness home.
High tea lovers are spoilt for choice, with Mamor offering five different high tea options, including a luxe high tea with three courses of sweet, savouries and scones with bottomless tea and a glass of sparkling; a smaller, petit high tea served over two courses; and a decadent chocolate high tea served that can be elevated with a chocolate cocktail, a box of Mamor handcrafted chocolates and a visit to the chocolate room.
There’s also a specially-priced seniors high tea, and bottomless scones served with tea and hot chocolate.
High Tea Society is treated to a luxe high tea on this visit, which is served over three stages – starting with savouries served on a three-tier cake stand; followed by scones and biscuits on a two-tier cake stand; and finishing with the petit fours on a single plate.
The roasted cherry tomato tart with tomato jam, bocconcini and lemon myrtle shortcrust is a standout, and the tomato truly sings, balancing sweetness with just the right touch of acidity.
Asparagus and haloumi skewers with lemon and mint offer a fresh palate cleanser between bites, and a generously filled duck pancake is slightly clumsy to eat, but rewards with excellent flavour.
Moving to the scones, and these warm beauties are easily the best we’ve had in a long time – fluffy and extremely moreish. Simply divine!
Shortbread daisy cookies filled with calamansi curd add a bright, citrusy lift, and look beautiful on the plate.
Last but not least, the petit fours are where Chef de Patisserie Janet McKenzie really shines and gets to show off her impressive artisan chocolate skills.
Served in a sherry glass, a verrine layered with chocolate mousse, raspberry crème pâtissière and lemon crumb and topped with a toffee-covered profiterole, gold-sprayed raspberries and a white chocolate shard is as visually striking as it is satisfying.
A chocolate tart with white chocolate cream, mango discs and peanut brittle balances richness with texture, while the chocolate meringue with cherry and white chocolate mousse is beautifully light.
The blood orange apricot Mamor chocolate is a particular delight, with the rich dark chocolate casing succeeded only by the sublime blood orange apricot ganache inside.
The menu throughout is flavoursome and thoughtfully composed, and the setting is uniquely elegant and whimsical without feeling overdone.
Mamor Chocolates delivers a high tea experience that feels special without being pretentious. It’s indulgent, beautifully presented, and clearly crafted with care – a charming escape into the sweet life.
