On the 40th floor above Southbank, High Tea at Strato Melbourne unfolds against a shifting panorama that sweeps from the CBD to Port Phillip Bay and back again.

You reach Strato via the lobby of the Oakwood Premier, a detour that gives no hint of the surprise that awaits: the most sensational view of Melbourne, where every table feels like the best seat in the house. Yet Strato’s Highest Tea isn’t content to rely on altitude alone.

Executive Chef Gagan Sharma brings an impressive international pedigree to the menu, with experience spanning the Taj Palace in India and Jumeirah’s Emirates Towers in Dubai. That breadth is evident in a high tea that balances classic comforts with modern touches.

The savoury tier opens with four sandwiches. The Silken Egg Sandwich, enriched with Dijon mustard and chives, is pleasingly creamy. The Golden Mango Coronation Chicken is lifted by fresh mint and coriander. A Smoked Salmon sandwich on a sesame bagel comes with whipped yuzu cream cheese.

The Prawn Cocktail Brioche is generously filled with Australian prawns and seafood sauce, it delivers a welcome touch of spice that lingers softly at the finish.

The standout item was the Slow-Braised Beef & Poppy Seed Pie, its shortcrust shell giving way to a hearty beef filling that has clearly spent hours becoming tender, with a house-made tomato chutney the perfect complement.

No high tea can succeed without good scones, and Strato’s version delivers. Served warm, both the plain and fruit varieties have lightly golden exteriors with soft centres. They split apart effortlessly by hand, ready to be generously layered with Chantilly cream and fruit jam.

The sweet selection closes service with flair. The Midnight Chocolate Gold Dome is the showpiece, a glossy orb adorned with gold leaf. Crack through the shell to reveal a rich dark chocolate mousse. Beside it, a Vanilla Silk Choux offers contrast with its airy pastry and smooth vanilla cream filling, while the Velvet Raspberry Macaron provides chew and brightness from its raspberry centre.

At $85 per person, including tea, coffee and a glass of bubbles on arrival, Strato represents strong value given both the setting and the quality of execution. Those inclined to linger can explore the gin cocktail list or opt for the Naughty Indulgence upgrade, which includes two hours of bottomless signature spritzes.

This Highest High Tea at Strato served every weekend provides the setting for cherished memories with friends high up above Melbourne.

High Tea is available at Strato every Saturday and Sunday, 12–3pm, from $85 per person.
