In the heart of bustling Subiaco, Western Australia, is Bar Amelie, a French-inspired wine bar that boasts a High(Ly good) Tea with packages that include 90 minutes of free-flowing bubbles…and the food isn’t bad either.
For starters, there are two courses, savoury and sweet, which come out sequentially so you can really sit back and enjoy each delicious bite. Adding to that, there are six items on the savoury menu and five on the dessert, so bring your appetite.
I started off strong with the tasty potato and cheese croquette with tomato salsa and balsamic glaze before moving onto the moreish mushroom arancini and truffle aioli. Their open sandwiches: ham, tomato, bocconcini, and smoked chicken, brie cheese with salsa verde really hit the spot. The smoked chicken was a standout, as was the final savoury, the smoked salmon bagel with cream cheese, capers and roquette.
It was then time to order my customary peppermint tea for the ‘pretty as a picture’ desserts. The baked cheesecake with whipped cream and fairy floss was too good to wait for, and the creamy dessert tasted just as good as it looked. While the vanilla cupcake with buttermilk icing was light and everything you could hope for in a cupcake. The Amelie honey cake with chocolate honeycomb was delicious and would be perfect on its own with your favourite hot beverage, and there is a reason the warm Portuguese tartlets appear on every one of their high tea menus, simply yum! My final sweet treat for the day was the crowd favourite, the macaron.
Owner, Kat Havilland, has created a welcoming contemporary bar, complete with a range of seating options, including the comfiest teal booths, and a fabulous high tea menu to match. There is a real feeling of family, shoutout to her niece Arlea, who was our waitress for the afternoon.
Their seasonal high tea runs every Saturday and Sunday, 2-4pm for just $50 per person and $10 extra for coffee and tea. While their 90-minute free flowing prosecco package is an extra $40, and $120 for Mumm Cordon Rouge.
For an afternoon of bubbles with an impressive and plentiful array of high tea bites in a wine bar setting, you can’t go past Bar Amelie’s High(Ly Good) Tea and the added bonus, there is a real urge to stick around afterwards for a cocktail or two.
