TWR Crown Towers Melbourne has just launched its new High Tea menu, and we paid a visit to try the Matcha High Tea.

High Tea at TWR is always a good experience, and one you can return to again and again, with the menu redesigned a few times each year. This time round there are four tiers of treats, including a layer of hot savoury and a layer of cold savoury, which we love.

Also known as The Green Edit High Tea, this seasonal offering leans fully into matcha across both the savoury and sweet tiers.

Executive Pastry Chef Hari Unterrainer met us and talked us through the High Tea, sharing stories from his recent travels and the High Teas he’d experienced along the way.

We loved the journey through matcha flavours, with plenty of variety and everything working well together. The savoury items were our favourite: full of flavour, generously sized and very satisfying.

From the savoury layer, we loved the Lobster & Crabmeat Brioche, made with lobster and Rockliff crabmeat bound in a botanical matcha cream, and finished with flash-fried samphire and salmon pearls. The Emerald Tide Bao, matcha cloud buns filled with ginger miso prawns and a scallop mousse, ocean herbs and yuzu miso cream, was another highlight. The Midori Wagyu Slider, served in a matcha milk bun with wagyu tonkatsu, wasabi slaw, pickled cucumber and Swiss cheddar, packed plenty of punch, while the Obsidian Matcha Chicken Press, wrapped in a sesame wrap with charred farmhouse chicken and a jade shiso kale emulsion, rounded out the savoury tier nicely.

From the sweet layer, the standout was the Spinning Wheel Lollipop, with a caramelised matcha chocolate centre. The Matcha Yuzu Opera Cake, layered with matcha whipped ganache, yuzu crémeux and joconde sponge, was another favourite. And then there are the scones, both plain and matcha, which are as good as they get.

Across most of the items, matcha lent its colour more than its flavour, though a few dishes, including the Spinning Wheel Lollipop, carried a distinct hit of it. On the whole, the matcha is used with a light touch.

There’s also a range of matcha drinks on offer, including lattes and cocktails. The Ichigo Veil brings strawberry and cherry blossom into the mix, while the White Matcha Zen leans smooth and creamy. Guests can also opt for 90 minutes of free-flowing Piper-Heidsieck Cuvée Brut NV.

High Tea at TWR at Crown Towers Melbourne is elegant, with food that’s finely crafted and full of flavour. It’s available Saturdays and Sundays, priced at $99 per person with tea, coffee or matcha, or $155 per person with 90 minutes of flowing Piper-Heidsieck Cuvée Brut NV.  This is one of the best high tea experiences in Melbourne right now.
