After being closed for many years the art deco gem that is the Myer Mural Hall reopened after an extensive renovation in April 2011. The Mural Hall is now open to the public for high tea on the last Sunday of each month. This is a stylish and refined high tea (afternoon tea) experience that features classical music and art history.

On arrival a glass of sparkling wine is offered to guests and the high tea is displayed on tiered cake stands. An assortment of fine bone china, glass tea ware for milk and sugar and with linen napkins set the tables.

On the day we attended musicians from Chamber Music Australia performed while we sipped our tea. Art Curator Kenneth Park gave a talk on the history of the murals and classical guitarist Daniel Nistico performed. Daniel is a graduate from the VCA and recently won the Global Youth Music Competition.

There is a generous serving of food set up and tea top ups are offered. My favourite item was the roasted beetroot, goat’s cheese and pistachio tart. The chicken sandwiches where filled with chunky pieces of chicken and the scones fresh and petite.

The Mural Hall is located on the top floor of the Myer city store, Mural Hall is called so because of the impressive collection of 8 original murals displaying influential figures from the arts, opera, literature, dance and fashion. So significant are these murals, the venue has been honoured with a National Trust Classification. The murals where created by artist Napier Waller. Sidney Myer, the founder of the then Myer Emporium commissioned the artist to create the murals, which act as a tribute to women and their achievements throughout history.

“It has such a heritage, having been the place where Sidney Myer fed the homeless during the Depression and it was where Chanel and Dior held fashion shows out of Paris in the 1940s.” Myer spokesman Mitch Catlin

This is the high tea event you will want to dress up for. Most guests had dressed for the occasion and I would go as far to say as this is the best dressed crowd I have seen at a Melbourne high tea event.

The Mural Hall is the high tea venue I’ve been waiting for. The Mural Hall is a unique and grand venue, serving generous portions of delicious food, hosting a stylish audience and showcasing a live entertainment package of classic music and art history.
