Send a love note to High Tea in historic surroundings, ensconced in the Sydney CBD at The Fullerton Hotel Sydney.

The heritage-listed The Fullerton Hotel Sydney is perhaps the most centrally located five-star property in Sydney’s bustling CBD, just a hop, skip, and jump from the best shopping and stunning sights in the country. Considering its location at 1 Martin Place and grand scale, it’s a miracle that once stepping past the threshold, the luxurious carpet and towering glass ceilings absorb the clattering of the masses. Once seated at ‘The Bar,’ guests already feel like they’re in their own little slice of history.

We were invited today to enjoy The Fullerton’s Signature Afternoon Tea, and sometimes, that’s just what’s needed, especially if you’re booking for a bigger crowd or for those who are perhaps less familiar with the delights of a Afternoon Tea and just discovering them. The savoury menu was full of crowd-pleasing favourites, crafted with precision. Cute cucumber sandwiches set atop sweet brioche with herby crème fraîche sat next to a pinwheel stuffed with smoky ham, cheese, and tomato, flourished with flavour and fun. The standout was a triple-layer smoked salmon, cream cheese, and dill sandwich laced with jewels of salmon roe.

Scones did not disappoint, and both plain and ‘Earl Grey sultana’ arrived glossy on top and fluffy throughout, warm and sunny, and served with a saucerful of fluffy cream and tart, zesty raspberry jam. Personally, we sometimes prefer less of a sour taste and opt for a strawberry or blueberry compote; however, this is purely subjective.

Sweets were plentiful, colourful, and nodded to the heritage of The Fullerton’s embrace of the past. A Malted Milk cookie filled with malted milk mousse (try saying that three times fast after a glass of Veuve Clicquot!) tipped its postman’s hat to the building’s original function – as the former General Post Office building. Tiny glasses of layered Neapolitan Ice Cream Verrine had a pop of maraschino cherry on top, whilst an Apple Charlotte layered with vanilla and rhubarb jelly danced on our tastebuds – autumnal and crumblesome.

The Signature Afternoon Tea experience comes with a cup of TWG Tea, of which there are ten varieties, from the stable English Breakfast to the more interesting Lemon Bush or Imperial Oolong green teas. If you or your guest aren’t really ‘tea people,’ you can opt for coffee, mocha, chai, or, for an additional charge, a glass of sparkling wine or champagne.

As we left The Fullerton, to the sound of a grand piano being expertly tinkled in the foyer, we were lucky enough to spot a young bride and groom happily embracing with flowers for their photographer. It was such a positive symbol of The Fullerton’s motto ‘Embracing The Past, Celebrating The Future,’ and we hope to be back to The Fullerton in the future for an Afternoon Tea.
