High Tea at Hyatt Regency Perth

Have you ever created your own high tea? Now you have the chance at the Hyatt Regency Perth.

The second thing I noticed after the showstopping dessert buffet was an empty three-tiered tower at my table, ready to be filled with my choices from the self-serve sweets and savouries. Another great touch was the new prosecco bar and tea station in the middle of the Cafe Restaurant. This all set the scene for a spoilt for choice afternoon of decadence.

I started the afternoon with a glass of the Wildflower prosecco in a champagne glass that had an ornate old timely feel to it. It wasn’t long before the wait staff were offering me choices from the “Indulgent Finger Sandwich Selection”. The egg mayonnaise, shallots and watercress finger sandwich was a standout.

Extra points for the white bread which was sooo light and fluffy. A close second was the smoked Norwegian trout, lemon infused crème fraiche with capers on granary bread. However, that took nothing away from the vegetarian continental cucumber, pear, mint, cumin and hummus sandwich or chicken breast, confit ginger, tarragon, apple, mayonnaise on spinach tortilla.

It was then time to make my way to the hot savouries counter where there were four options on offer. I was really keen to try the skilfully displayed tempura prawns, and they didn’t disappoint. The homemade mini sausage roll, spinach & cheese croquette and roasted vegetable pastizzi also hit the spot. There was a number of self-serve condiments available, code for coat your savouries in sweet chilli, and horseradish sauce.

I promptly consulted the extensive Red Leaf tea menu and opted for a Marrakesh Mint tea for the highly anticipated dessert buffet. A nice touch was brewing my own tea and reading the accompanying information card while I decided where to start with the sweet treats. In the end I had to go with their signature sticky date pudding with toffee sauce. It’s not hard to see why it’s such a crowd favourite, it was quite simply the best sticky date pudding I’ve ever had. The hero is the toffee sauce which you could eat (or is that drink) on its own. I really wanted a second helping but there was still so much ahead of me.

The bite sized plain and raisin scones with whipped cream and fruit preserves followed. I loved their compact size and rustic appearance which gave them a home-made look, and taste, yum! The front window of the buffet showed off the individual chocolate mousses and black forest trifle verrines to perfection. Topped with a chocolate leaf, the mousse was surprisingly light and the chocolate sauce swirled through it was a nice surprise. The verrine was everything a black forest cake should be, and more.

Another side of the buffet contained the slices and tarts, and there was plenty on offer. My favourites were the lemon meringue tart and the opera cake slice which really lived up to its name. Next door was a lolly bar for the young, and the young at heart and opposite was the gluten free line of desserts which included another favourite, crème brulee as well as white chocolate blondie and freshly cut watermelon. As an aside don’t forget to advise the Hyatt when you book if you require a gluten free option as they will create a special customised savoury and sweet menu for you.

The Hyatt Regency Perth’s high tea is back, bigger and better than ever. The desserts were the clear winner and the great thing about a buffet is you can go back time and time again for your favourites. It’s available every Saturday from 2-4pm for only $75 per person and bookings are essential.

Make sure you bring your appetite!
