High Tea at Lobby Lounge The InterContinental Wellington

The InterContinental Wellington has created an afternoon tea of Kiwi childhood delights. This High Tea is full of character and clever interpretations of Kiwi classic flavours.

The Lobby Lounge at The InterContinental has become a favourite High Tea spot in Wellington. It’s comfortable and cozy lounge with a relaxed yet sophisticated air that allows for a slow paced high tea with plenty of time to savour each bite. The table was set with the black and gold theme with fine porcelain by Cristina Re and the chair were very comfortable.

The High Tea is served on a wide three tiered stand and bursting with colour. Our high tea was served by Victoria who explained each item.

The fondant Buzzy Bee and other touches made it really stand out as something different from the standard fare. We began with choosing our T2 tea (other options available) and with the choice to add vodka to our Traffic Light drink which is part of the experience. We declined the vodka and loved the soft drink as adults.

We worked our way up from the bottom tier and began with the Kiwi burger slider, the bun was delicious and all the components, including the egg, fitted together perfectly. The lamb sandwich was delicious with a lovely and well balanced mint sauce. Both the Chorizo Sausicon (a take on sausage roll) and Quiche Lorraine were winners for both of us, the pastry on both was sensational. The words, ‘Mary Berry would be proud’ were used, Siba the pastry chef should be proud. The Buzzy crudité skewer, our final item on the savoury layer prepared us nicely for the sweet treats to come.

The next layer started with the L&P Cheesecake, it was delicious with the signature L&P flavours coming through with the pop rocks and pearls. The Kiwi fruit and Strawberry Pavlova was both crispy and fluffy on the inside, perfect for any Kiwi table. Another Kiwi classic, The Raspberry Lamington was light and the Chantilly cream was a great touch. To finish we had the well balanced Custard Square with the lovely Mary Lou doll image and the Jaffa. The Jaffa was a great way to finish this whimsical afternoon tea.

The Buzzy Bee High Tea is fun, set in a lovely relaxing atmosphere with great and unobtrusive service. With sizeable morsels and a Traffic Light drink it is great value. It is a great venue to pass time chatting to friends. A child’s version is available and the hotel can accommodate some restrictions, please contact the hotel.
