Afternoon Tea at The Milestone Hotel London

Afternoon Tea at The Milestone Hotel London
Afternoon Tea at The Milestone Hotel London

High Tea Society went back in time to 1922 to partake in the tradition of afternoon tea at the Milestone Hotel.

This historic hotel is located directly opposite Hyde Park, an ideal location for a stroll once you’ve indulged in their epic afternoon teas.

We dined in the Park Lounge and it’s altogether too easy to imagine ourselves as Ladies from a previous era dining in this historic dining room, designed as it is with hand-picked art hanging on every wall and a warm cosy feel, perfect when you’re indulging in the time honoured tradition of afternoon tea.

The tea menu is extensive, but I can never resist the lure of the classic Earl Grey, which to my mind complements the afternoon tea perfectly – alongside our glass of champagne of course.

The tea-stand is impressive, and I have seen many an afternoon-tea stand before. The sandwiches are definitely from the traditional school with some contemporary twists – the chicken mayonnaise comes with a coating of almonds around the side, the cucumber is a Greek yoghurt & cucumber blend and then there are the more typical offerings of salmon and cream cheese, ham and mustard, tomato and cheese and egg and watercress.

Scones are brought to your table only when you ask for them, so they remain warm until the exact moment you want to crack it open to lather in cream and jam.

It’s a mistake to indulge too wholly in the sandwiches, not because they are not excellent (they are, the chicken one being my favourite!), but because you will want be do justice to the truly excellent range of patisserie offerings at hand.

The treats were wide-ranging, there was a poached rhubarb & strawberry mousse, beetroot and chocolate mousse, battenburg cake, honey meringue lollipop, Victorian sponge, fruit tart, cheesecake and my personal favourites – the mango macarons.

The freshly baked scones, whilst perfectly adequate, warm and crumbly as they are, are not the main event. I have barely room to do justice to the desserts and there is no doubt that it is here, along with the stunning surrounds, that are what makes the Milestone Hotel an excellent contender in the options for an afternoon tea in London.

The Milestone Tea Academy events are hosted by Dananjaya Silva, Managing Director of PMD Tea, in the stunning setting of Cheneston’s restaurant. Dan will guide guests through the history of tea and how to expertly pair tea with food.
