The Archibald High Tea at Sofitel Sydney Wentworth reimagines tradition with theatrical flair, seasonal flavours and a whimsical nod to Australia's most iconic portrait prize.
The art of High Tea takes centre stage at the recently refurbished Sofitel Sydney Wentworth, where culinary creativity meets arts and culture in celebration of the annual Archibald Prize. A proud partner of the Art Gallery of New South Wales for over 20 years, Sofitel’s latest offering is its most inspired yet.
Fresh from a $70 million transformation, the iconic Sofitel Sydney Wentworth blends classic grandeur with modern elegance. The hotel’s refined interiors, sophisticated service and central CBD location make it an ideal destination for locals and visitors seeking a luxurious city escape.
Ascend to Level 5 and enter the Velvet Room via Club Millésime – an intimate, velvet-draped space exuding drama and decadence, perfectly suited for an afternoon of artistic indulgence.
Curated by Executive Chef Bektas Özcan and a team of pastry chefs this year’s Archibald High Tea draws inspiration from Australia’s most prestigious portrait prize and the nearby Royal Botanic Garden. The result is an imaginative and nature-infused interpretation of the traditional afternoon tea, presented with theatrical flair.
Abandoning the traditional tiered stand, this deconstructed High Tea begins with savoury delights served tableside from an elegant trolley. Chef Harrison Chrysostomou engaged us in conversation as he assembles charcuterie and cheese plates, which can be tailored to dietary requirements or preferences. It’s an impressive start and really elevates the afternoon tea experience. Standouts include the oozy Truffle Brie, generously layered in aromatic truffle paste alongside delicate slices of poached chicken, roast beef, smoked salmon and melt-in-the-mouth salami accompanied by artisan breads, crackers and house-made condiments.
A plate of warm items is also included, featuring a petite quiche, mini pie, and a perfectly executed scone. We made quick work of the quiche and pie despite them feeling unnecessary given the generosity of the cheese and charcuterie grazing plates. The scone however was flawless – crisp edged, fluffy-centred and served with lashings of cream and a house-made strawberry jam so divine it deserves to be bottled and sold as a take-home memento.
Then comes the real showstopper, a whimsical tray of sweet treats, styled as a garden of delights. Every element is edible from the white chocolate base textured liked raked sand, to chocolate soil and verdant moss-like cake garnishes. Highlights include the signature Wentworth Cheesecake & Almond Tart, the blueberry choux bursting with colour and flavour and the Pistachio Opera all inspired by the garden and jacaranda blooms, which also echos the colour palette of this year’s Archibald Prize. Together, these playful yet refined creations tell a cohesive visual and flavourful story.
A selection of Dilmah teas including classic black, floral jasmine and green varietals complements the menu beautifully. Tea is served in luxurious designer teaware by iconic Australian designer Cristina Re, adding a further touch of style to the experience.
Service is polished and attentive. On our visit, the experience felt incredibly exclusive, although the absence of other guests impacted the atmosphere slightly. The buzz of a crowd would lend warmth and energy to the elegant surrounds. The dining soundtrack was contemporary and cool, but perhaps a little mismatched with the otherwise classic tone of service.
High Tea bookings should be made at least 48 hours in advance, with any dietary requirements specified at the time of booking. As a seasonal offering, this imaginative high tea delivers outstanding value for such a richly immersive experience.
