Experience the Art of Afternooning at El Encanto in Santa Barbara, where high tea meets astrological whimsy with bespoke teas, seasonal delicacies, and ocean-view luxury.

Santa Barbara, just 90 minutes from Los Angeles, offers a dreamy blend of Californian coastal luxury and bohemian charm. Known as the “American Riviera,” this seaside haven offers a vibrant art scene, an abundance of cellar door tasting rooms, and an effortless blend of relaxation and sophistication.

Perched high above the city with panoramic views of the Pacific, El Encanto, a Belmond Hotel, epitomizes understated elegance. Nestled amid lush gardens, this hillside retreat combines Old Hollywood glamour with a wellness-forward ethos, perfectly mirroring Santa Barbara’s free-spirited charm.

True to its unique vibe, El Encanto offers a twist on traditional afternoon tea with its Botanica Afternoon Tea. Dubbed “The Art of Afternooning,” the experience incorporates Astrobotanical Infusions—custom tea blends tailored to your zodiac sign, enriched with adaptogenic herbs. Served in the ocean-facing dining room or on the terrace, the ambiance sets the tone for a serene and indulgent experience. However, on this visit, our party was hosted in a private upstairs room, which, while intimate, lacked the terrace’s atmospheric setting.

The tea menu promised an intriguing journey of flavours and wellness benefits. With my Sagittarius blend unavailable, I chose the Scorpio-inspired Saffron Rose Tea, a black tea infused with warming cinnamon, sweet vanilla, ripe fig, and earthy saffron. Touted to nourish the skin, reduce inflammation, and boost libido, it was delicious, though I can’t say I felt entirely transformed. My companion’s green-hued infusion—a delicate mix of oolong, green tea, and floral notes—was visually striking and just as enticing.

The tea is complemented by a menu of delicacies crafted by El Encanto’s pastry team, who blend culinary artistry with seasonal inspiration. Their latest creative collaboration celebrates the Santa Barbara State Street Ballet’s Nutcracker with a themed afternoon tea.

On our visit, the classic three-tiered stand offered a medley of savoury bites, scones, and sweets. Highlights of the savoury selection included a nostalgic devilled egg and a decadent New England lobster roll. However, the smoked salmon disappointed, and the expected bagel crisps were replaced with lacklustre water crackers. Guests can elevate their Afternoon Tea experience with a glass of Veuve Clicquot (+$10) or Ruinart Blanc de Blancs (+$20)—a welcome indulgence alongside the savoury course.

The scones were a triumph: Buttermilk and Meyer Lemon Poppy Seed varieties arrived warm, paired with strawberry rhubarb jam, clotted cream, and local honey. The textures were delightfully crunchy, contrasting beautifully with the creamy accompaniments.

The sweet course stole the show. The Chrysanthemum Macaron was a delicate delight, pairing harmoniously with the teas. Lavender Lemon Curd Pavlova provided a bright, zesty punch, while the Carrot Cake offered a sophisticated twist with its cream cheese filling and pecan dulcey chocolate crunch.

El Encanto’s commitment to sustainability shines through its menu, which highlights locally sourced and organic ingredients, including wild seafood and seasonal produce. The detailed allergy information and customisable options reflect their thoughtful approach to hospitality.

Botanica Afternoon Tea is an ideal setting for milestone moments or celebrations. Its blend of astrological whimsy, culinary artistry, and luxurious surroundings captures the essence of Santa Barbara. Whether seeking relaxation or a unique celebration, El Encanto invites you to slow down, savour the moment, and embrace the Art of Afternooning.
