Situated in the Crown Towers Perth, The Waiting Room (TWR) is a stunning venue with an impressive ‘Birdcage High Coffee’ to match.

The first thing that struck me when I walked in was the sheer size of the cocktail bar and the natural light beaming through the large windows. Once seated, I took in the beautiful décor, including the unique three-tiered rose gold birdcage stand that was promptly filled with our menu for the afternoon. If that’s not enough, there were also three coffee cocktails on offer: Caramel Espresso Martini, ABC and Chateau de L’Orange, which paired beautifully with the menu.

Speaking of the Angus Beef Slider was a great way to start the afternoon. I particularly loved the addition of the smoked Scamorza cheese, pickled cucumber and Dijon; extra points for the TWR branding on the top of the bun.

The lobster spring roll followed, and the Nam Jim Mayo was the perfect accompaniment to the decadent and light savoury. I finished up the savouries on the bottom tier with the truffle, forest mushroom and aged cheddar croquette. Dipped in aioli, the flavours were simply amazing, making it hands down my favourite savoury of the day.

Time to jump to the top tier where the palette cleansing sweets resided. I started with the tall glass which featured layers of Raspberry Cremeux, a tart yuzu crunch, finished off with freeze dried mandarin and strawberry jelly, a-mazing! Next up was the mango and passionfruit petit sphere that was both pretty as a picture and delicious. A blueberry and lemon myrtle coffee macaron rounded off the tier with a mini sugar rush. More points for placing both tiers of sweet treats on gold squares, so it was much easier to transport them to your plate.

I saved the best for last, the middle tier, where the decadent desserts resided. I opted for the seemingly lightest one of the three first, the almond and vanilla financier with fresh raspberry. The two-bite delight had buttery and vanilla overtones, which complimented the raspberry beautifully. A milk chocolate melting moment filled with coffee and hazelnut followed, and the addition of the caramelised white chocolate on top, well, topped it off. My final dessert is not for the faint hearted, a dark chocolate cigar filled with salted caramel ganache and coffee Kahlúa. There’s a lot going on, but boy does it work, taking out dessert of the day.

There are so many great things about TWR’s ‘Birdcage High Coffee’. It’s available from 12pm to 3pm daily (bookings are required), and you don’t have to be a coffee drinker to enjoy it. Simply switch your drink of choice and there’s plenty on offer. However, there is coffee in some of the desserts, but it’s not overpowering. I opted for a peppermint tea from their extensive tea menu for the sweet tiers, and it went down a treat. Priced at a very respectable $69.50 for teetotallers and $89.50, which includes a cocktail of your choice, TWR exudes class from start to finish. Everything from the décor to the service, to the menus presentation and taste is top notch. It is perhaps Crown Perth’s jewel in the high coffee AND tea crown.
