High Tea at Flutterbies Cottage Cafe is like stepping back in time, with whimsical décor and extravagant splashes of pink it’s the perfect setting for a traditional afternoon tea experience in the countryside.

A visit to Flutterbies Cottage Cafe is like stepping back in time to a celestial space filled with whimsical décor, country charm and friendly service.

Flutterbies Cottage Cafe in the quaint town of Tyalgum has something for everyone with retail space, gin bar, coffee roaster, pizza house, bakehouse and a rustic market in a picturesque garden setting. But it’s to the tearoom we’ve come to soak up the decadent atmosphere.

We’re greeted by the eternally cheery host Haniel, who seats us in the tearoom which is a pretty explosion of pink, glitter and is delightfully over the top. Maybe it’s just me, but I like my high tea setting to be extravagant.

Your high tea experience starts with a glass of Sparkling Rose Bliss Champagne topped with fairy floss and edible rose petals, which really creates a sense of occasion. The table is set with linen and a crocheted tablecloth and edible menus!

The three-tiered high tea stand is presented laden with delectable goodies in addition to individual serves of scones. But first, the savoury selection…

The lower tier is filled with an impressive arrangement of savouries starting with the warm heirloom cherry tomato and basil tart and the warm leek goat’s cheese quiche. The tart is a standout with the flakiest pastry and tomatoes so fresh they’re bursting with garden goodness. The black sesame seed macaron filled with Tasmanian smoked salmon, cream cheese & dill is a bold blend of sweet and savoury and a good segue to the sweet delicacies to follow.

The mini scones come already separated and spread with rose petal jam and dollops of Chantilly cream topped with edible blooms. It’s unusual to have the scones already assembled with lashings of jam & cream, but they are perfectly proportioned and delicious, so it’s a yes from me.

A highlight of the top tier treats are the mini Flutterbies cake, a petite version of their signature butterfly cake alongside the Black Forrest Cupcake which a devilish death by chocolate and finish with a palate cleansing white chocolate and gold glitter dripped strawberry.

All this is created by Pastry Chef Meredith Peters aka the “cake queen” who creates these daily treats for customers of the Tyalgum village favourite and has been doing so consistently since they opened their doors in 2005.

With prior notice, Flutterbies chefs will happily cater to dietary requirements such as offering vegetarian, vegan, gluten free options and work with guests to create an exquisite experience, with a minimum 24 hours notice.

Tea and coffee is included in your High Tea experience and Flutterbies offer a selection of teas including house made Flutterbies Chai Tea, traditional Earl Grey and the exotic Monk Pear, however we recommend you stick to theme and opt for the specialty rose and peppermint tea served in elaborate tea pots and sipped from Royal Mayfair Bone China from England.

High Tea at Flutterbies is the perfect combination of pretty setting, charming hospitality and simple savoury and sweet delicacies executed to perfection.

If you’re looking for a day trip from the Gold Coast or Brisbane or lingering longer in Northern NSW’s glorious Tweed region, then explore the hinterland and indulge in a High Tea at Flutterbies Cottage Café.
