The Chandon in Bloom High Tea at the five-star hotel: The Westin Perth, is very popular, and with good reason.

I love coming back to the spacious, acoustic friendly Haven Lounge at The Westin Perth. It’s always busy, yet you never feel like you’re too close to your neighbours. It’s simply the perfect setting to kick back for the afternoon, and mine started with a tipple of the moment, Moet & Chandon Champagne. Then my own (points for that) three-tiered tower of sweet and savoury treats arrived at the table; and boy what a feast for the eyes and tummy!

Not surprisingly, I was quick to try the first savoury, the lemon pepper chicken with aioli on a brioche bun. The bun was light and fluffy, the chicken was perfectly seasoned, and the aioli finished it off beautifully. What a start!

No pressure on the next savoury, which just happened to be the spiced free-range egg, mayonnaise, and wild rocket on tomato bread. This finger sandwich was another knockout; I loved the abundance of egg filling. The other finger sandwich followed and was equally impressive; smoked salmon, cream cheese, soft herbs, and cucumber on white bread.

It was then time to mix it up with the roast duck rillettes with mandarin on rye. I loved the unconventional presentation of a mini mug for the duck and a crunchy rye slither on top.

I then ordered a blackcurrant and hibiscus JING Tea (for the sweets on the second tier), which I loved so much that I’ve since ordered some online. The unconventional was back in the form of the strawberry, rose and yogurt rice pudding. Reading that I assumed it would be housed in something, but no, it was a pink dollop of deliciousness on a biscuit base, yum!

Another pretty dessert followed: the pandan, passionfruit, and mango rum. The light, refreshing layers were a welcome addition after the sweetness of the rice pudding. The kaffir lime and peanut tart was very, well, nutty, with the buttery case another crowd pleaser. I finished up this tier with the dessert of the day, valrhona dark chocolate, malt, banana, and caramel. This dessert had the wow factor and then some. I loved the richness of the chocolate and the unexpected caramel crunch running through the middle.

I finished up the day with the tropical scone with coconut Chantilly and pineapple mojito jam. This felt like a cross between a biscuit and a scone due to the crunch on the outside, and the embedded fruit pieces just added to its uniqueness and appeal. Extra points for going against convention with the pineapple mojito jam.

This Chandon-themed high tea starts at $65 per person and goes up to $85 with a glass of Moet & Chandon Champagne. Sittings are on Friday 2pm and Saturday and Sunday 11am and 2pm. Booking is a must.
