High Tea at Grünthal Brew

Grünthal Brew is in Verdun in the Adelaide Hills, just off the Hahndorf exit roundabout. It is located at the former Grumpy’s Brewhaus, which was fire ravaged. The new owners rebuilt and have made it into a warm, comfortable and inviting restaurant and microbrewery.

Grünthal was the first name given to Verdun by the original Prussian settlers who fled their homeland in search of safe lands and greener pastures.  Grünthal means Green Valley in German.

Owners, Saul and Sheree Sullivan, have been cheese makers for over 35 years combined at their family business, Udder Delights and are now brewing beer and cider in the microbrewery at Grünthal Brew.

High Tea at Grünthal was indulgent, super fresh and tasty.  All items on the stand are made on site from locally sourced ingredients.

Everything was delicious!  The chicken ribbon sandwich was filled to the brim with chicken.  It took me back to my childhood eating fresh sandwiches full of chicken and mayonnaise with my Nanna.

The mixed berry and vanilla cheesecake were the most perfect looking mini cheesecake I have ever seen.  It melted in your mouth and was moreish.

The scones were moist and more than satisfactory.  The vanilla cream was the freshest cream I have ever tasted.

Make sure you stop at their shop on your way out where you can buy local cheeses, gin, jams and much more.

Angie McBride

Angie got her passion for high tea, in particular scones from her Nanna. She would stay at her house regularly and they would bake scones, pasties and cakes for hours. Angie’s scones are quite popular amongst her friends. She says they need to be traditionally made though – kneading the butter and making a well for the milk! Not cream and lemonade thank you! She is a self-confessed tea snob and loves a great quality tea. She says it’s lovely, soothing and there’s nothing like a pretty tea cup.
