The first thing I noticed when I walked into Bites by D was a long glass cabinet displaying the most beautiful take home desserts you’ve ever seen which set the scene for a fabulous afternoon full of delicious sweet and savoury treats.

Given this place is BYO I took the opportunity to don my teetotallers cap for the afternoon and start with their freshly squeezed Summer Sunset juice which comprises of watermelon, pineapple, orange and passionfruit. To say it was refreshing is an understatement, it really was summer in a glass!

It was the perfect accompaniment to the tower of savoury delights. I started at the top tier with the garlic vegetable frittata which tasted as good as it looked. The roasted vegetables combined beautifully with the piped cumin and lemon cream cheese, spiced dukkah and pickled chilli on top.

I then turned my attention to its neighbour, the mini beef slider. The light and fluffy toasted brioche perfectly complimented the beef patty, pickled cucumber and house-made royal sauce. It was finished off with a decorative slice of radish which gave the slider a zesty kick.

The gourmet salad in a tall glass was a great chaser to the mini burger. The quinoa, roasted pumpkin slaw with herb dressing was tasty but the real heroes were the feta and sweet chilli almonds sprinkled on top, yum! I then got my scone fix for the afternoon with a cheese and chive option with lashings of fennel infused butter which more than satisfied this self-professed ‘sconnesseur’.

A palate cleanser followed, namely the passionfruit sorbet with freeze dried raspberries. The delicate raspberry sprinkles gave a crunch you don’t normally see in sorbet but it worked, and then some. I could’ve had seconds, well that was until I saw the tower of showstopping desserts come out.

I quickly ordered a pot of T2’s lemongrass and ginger tea to accompany my sweet treats which all looked like a work of art so it was hard to know where to start. I settled on the gluten free summer burst that has everything you could wish for in a summer dessert – coconut sponge nestled next to a mango and raspberry mousse and passionfruit jelly, topped off with lemon and mascarpone crème and fresh fruits. Trust me it tasted even better than it sounds, just exquisite.

Next up was the hazelnut praline millefeuille. Starting from the top was a creme chantilly with delicately sprinkled macadamia praline, underneath was a vanilla and hazelnut mousseline. This dessert reminded me of a vanilla slice but soooo much better!

The toffee crunch choux was to die for with the crunchy case housing the most amazing salted caramel pastry cream and sitting atop were toasted macadamia’s that were a dessert in themselves.

Ok, fair to say I was suitably impressed with the menu so far but then came dish of the day, the gold bar. There aren’t enough superlatives to describe just how amazing this cube is. Imagine a chocolate sponge with chocolate mousse, raspberry jelly and caramel cremeux dipped in chocolate. But wait there’s more, sitting atop is torched meringue and caramel popcorn with freeze dried raspberries. Amazingly the flavours don’t compete but rather compliment each other making this one of the best high tea desserts I’ve ever had. My advice would be save the best for last so you can savour the flavours long after the last mouthful.

Owner and head chef Zoe Mallis has created a stunning high tea menu that looks and tastes amazing. The menu changes weekly however you can purchase an array of showstoppers from the long glass cabinet any time of the day.

Their high teas run from Tuesday to Sunday for a steal at $45 on weekdays and $55 on weekends. There’s even a twilight session for a little bit extra on Saturdays at 4:30.

Go on treat yourself and make a booking at Bites by D for their high tea, you’ll wonder why you didn’t do it sooner.
