A pleasant high tea experience in a homely café, Forget Me Not in Brisbane’s Graceville delivers a hearty meal.
Forget Me Not Café has been serving the local community in Brisbane’s leafy Graceville for around 40 years, with the current owners taking over the business in 2019. On our visit, on a sunny Saturday afternoon, we were one of two tables enjoying high tea in the brightly decorated cafe, and witnessed a constant stream of patrons dropping by for coffee, afternoon tea, late lunches, and take away. This café is clearly a local favourite. As well as standard fare, the all-day menu features some Asian and Fusion flavours, reflecting the owner’s cultural heritage.
One of these fusion delights made its way to the high tea stand and proved to be our favourite of the day. The spicy beef slider, with Thai aromatics and chilli, was a novel and welcome start to proceedings. We really enjoyed the depth of flavour, and the amount of chilli was just to our liking. Also on the savoury side, we rated the prawn and dill mousse on Japanese milk bread, and the finger sandwiches, which included rare roast beef with horseradish, as well as turkey, cranberry and Camembert.
The scones were a delight; light and fluffy on the inside, and with just the right amount of crust. They were served with fresh cream and a very good quality raspberry jam, which is also available for purchase.
Then on to the sweets, and the top layer of the tower contained a good selection, including a rum-soaked Canelé, a delicate raspberry macaron, and a madeleine. We also enjoyed the mixed berry cheesecake.
Being an unlicensed venue, there was no clinking of glasses to be heard around high-tea towers, but what it lacked in fizz, Forget Me Not made up for in excellent barista-made Wolff coffee, and a very impressive loose leaf tea selection from Byron Bay Tea Company.
The double-sided tea menu included all the usual favourites you’d expect, like English Breakfast and Earl Grey, as well as a host of interesting offerings like Ginger Zing, Dandylicious, and Buddha’s Tears. In addition to the coffee, we tried the Jasmine and Peppermint teas, which complemented our treats very well indeed.
The staff at Forget Me Not were attentive and hard working. They were supporting a large number of patrons on a busy afternoon and remained calm and friendly throughout. Rather than a swanky, high-end hotel offering, high tea at this venue is a more down-to-earth affair. While not delivering elegant table settings and the sort of ambience usually associated with high tea, Forget Me Not does deliver warm hospitality and a generous serve of tasty treats.
We enjoyed the experience and came away with no room left for dinner, but at a cost of $65 per person, we thought it a little on the pricey side.
