Calling all chocoholics, there’s a Chocolate High Tea to die for at The Westin Perth's Haven Lounge.
The inspiration behind this chocolate lovers paradise was the Head Pastry Chef, Kiran Jetti’s attendance at the Valrhona chocolate school in Japan last year where he gained a great insight into how to use four types of chocolate: Ivorie, Dulcey, Jivara and Satillia.
So without further ado…my afternoon kicked off in the most spectacular fashion with THE best hot chocolate I have ever had! Served in a mini double wall latte glass, the wickedly decadent chocolate beverage was topped with a caramelised honey foam. The only way it could have been improved was if there was more of it.
The afternoon then went up another notch with a complimentary glass of Moet to accompany my individual three-tiered tower of sweet and savoury treats.
I started at the bottom where four delicious savoury delights awaited me. I opted to begin with the blue cheese “Waldorf” apple scone with roasted grape and walnut. The two-bite delight was an alternate take on your traditional scone. The blue cheese took the place of the cream while the sweet roasted grape stood in for the strawberry jam.
Next up was another twist on a classic in the shape of roast chicken with hazelnut mayo and tarragon served on a French baguette. The hazelnut gave a welcome crunch and nuttiness to the creamy chicken filling.
Chocolate and beef are not two ingredients you expect to see together, throw in some horseradish coleslaw on a brioche and you have a meat lovers dream. The chocolate in the jus brought a richness to the overall flavour and took it to the next level.
The twists kept coming with my final and favourite savoury of the day, the pretty as a picture cucumber finger sandwich on cacao bread. The deliciously light and refreshing sandwich was the gift that kept on giving as your taste buds danced between the smoked salmon, orange cream cheese and pickled cucumber, simply sensational!
I then moved up the tower to the middle tier where four mouth-watering desserts resided. I jumped right in with the earl grey pannacotta on shortbread. However, it was the mandarin jelly on top that stole the show when it burst open and coated the creamy pannacotta.
The citrus theme continued in the chocolate tart with hazelnut praline and lemon. Perhaps surprisingly, this dessert reminded me of a creamy version of Ferrero Rocher. Just as impressive was the pecan cake with layers and layers of soft caramel, divine! The white chocolate and pressed sable with seasonal berry’s was a refreshing end to the dessert tier.
I left the top tier to last for a very good reason, simply put it’s a chocoholics (and I count myself as one) dream come true. Are you ready? It was a chocolate scone with homemade Nutella and Chantilly cream. The scone was more akin to a brownie but that just made it even more indulgent. I could seriously eat the Nutella with a spoon, ditto the cream so this tier deservedly took out dessert of the day.
It’s also not often I have two coffees in one sitting but the Five Senses Espresso House Blend was so good I couldn’t help myself while the Jing Tea list is lengthy so there really is something for everyone!
Pricing starts at a very reasonable $59 per person which includes tea and coffee and goes up to $79 for a glass of Moët & Chandon Brut Imperial Champagne.
The Chocolate High Tea is available at The Westin Perth until 19 September 2021 however it may be extended if the demand is there so fellow chocoholics don’t delay, make a booking today. Your taste buds will thank you, trust me!
